Long fin keel
A moderately long keel with a cut-away forefoot and a separate skeg-hung rudder.
The long fin sits between the traditional full keel and the modern fin keel: the forefoot is cut away so the keel starts well aft of the bow, the keel itself is longer than a racing fin, and the rudder is hung on a separate skeg. Designs such as the Contessa 32 and the Valiant 40 use it to combine directional stability and a protected rudder with acceptable performance to windward. It is the configuration most often described as a good offshore compromise.
