Skeg-hung rudder
A rudder mounted on a fixed fin (skeg) that supports its leading edge.
A skeg is a fixed fin moulded into the hull immediately ahead of the rudder; the rudder is hung on it with a bearing at the bottom as well as at the top. The skeg protects the rudder, supports it against impact, and adds directional stability, which is why offshore designs such as the Valiant 40 and Tartan 37 use it. Steering is a little heavier than with a spade rudder. A partial skeg supports only the upper part of the rudder.
