Fractional sloop
A single-masted rig where the forestay attaches below the masthead.
On a fractional rig the forestay meets the mast part-way up — typically at 7/8 or 3/4 of its height — so the mainsail is the dominant sail and the headsail is relatively small. The mast can be bent with backstay tension to flatten the main, which racers value, and headsails are easier to tack and cheaper to replace. Most modern production boats, including the Hanse 315 and Beneteau First 36.7, are fractional sloops. A masthead sloop, by contrast, carries the forestay to the top of the mast and relies more on large overlapping genoas.
