Overview
The Hanse 315 is a 31 ft (9.62 m) production cruiser introduced by HanseYachts in 2015 as the entry-level model of its range, with a Judel/Vrolijk hull, a fractional sloop rig with self-tacking jib, twin wheels, two cabins and one head. It was voted European Yacht of the Year shortly after launch and remains in production at Greifswald, Germany.
History
Hanse had used the 315 name once before for a Judel/Vrolijk 31-footer of the mid-2000s (now listed by the builder as the "Hanse 315a" legacy model); the 2015 boat is an entirely new design and is the one the used market means by "Hanse 315". It debuted in 2015, took the European Yacht of the Year title in its category, and was still listed as a current model in 2026, so most examples on the used market are 2015–2020s boats sold in Europe and North America.
Design
The hull is solid, hand-laid glass below the waterline with vinylester outer skins, foam-cored topsides and a balsa-cored deck; the keel is an L-shaped fin with bulb and the rudder a spade. The deck-stepped, double-swept-spreader Seldén rig carries a 98% self-tacking jib as standard, so tacking needs no sheet handling. Auxiliary power is a small (roughly 12–20 hp depending on option and year) diesel on a saildrive.
Variants
There are no separate generations; the factory choices that change catalog specs are the standard 1.85 m deep keel versus the 1.37 m shallow keel, and twin wheels versus a tiller. Interior layouts (a two-cabin arrangement with the head aft) and engine upgrades are options within the same model.
Known issues
Published figures for the 315 vary by source and year: displacement is quoted as 4,700 kg by the launch-period reviews but 5.1–5.3 t by later builder material, and fuel tankage is quoted as 100 L by the builder's distributor and 160 L by two magazines. The catalog uses the launch-period figures for weight and the builder-side figure for fuel; the evidence rows show each claim.
Buying used
Yachting World's test of an early hull noted signs of cost-cutting (weak guardrail fittings, an unsupported genoa lead) that were corrected on later boats, so check early 2015–2016 examples for factory updates. Saildrive diaphragms and anodes need periodic replacement; confirm the service history. Verify which keel is fitted because the shallow keel affects both draft and pointing.

Is it right for you?
Editorial judgments, not measurements. Each one says why.
- TrailerabilityNot suited · high confidence
3.35 m beam, 4,700 kg light displacement and a fixed 1.85 m (or 1.37 m) keel: a yard haul-out and road permit job, not a ramp boat.
- First boatSuitable · medium confidence
Self-tacking jib, all lines led aft and light, well-damped steering make it a boat a novice crew can sail short-handed; Yachting Monthly explicitly recommended it "for anyone starting out with their first new boat, or downsizing", and Sail described it as an entry-level model aimed at young families. The performance hull rewards trim, so it is not a forgiving heavy cruiser.
