Catalina 22 Sport

The Catalina 22 Sport, introduced in June 2004 and still offered at the builder's closure, is the modern Catalina 22: the original 21 ft 6 in hull and 7 ft 8 in beam with a lead-ballasted fibreglass retractable keel, hand-laid hull with bonded liner, 206 sq ft rig and contemporary deck styling. Catalina built it in response to class members who wanted a new boat with the weight and dimensions of the original rather than the heavier Mk II.

Launched at hull #15540, initially marketed as the Capri 22 swing keel before taking the Catalina 22 Sport name; SAIL magazine named it best small cruiser for trailering. It was sold alongside the Mk II until 2010 and then on its own from Largo, Florida.

Given its own record because it is a current, separately named model with its own builder specification page, even though it shares the original hull. The builder quotes LOA as 23 ft 10 in including the rudder; the 21 ft 6 in hull length is stored here so it compares with the other Catalina 22s.

Used Sports are few and hold value; the lead-in-fibreglass keel avoids the rust of the old iron casting but the pivot and pennant still need inspection. Most come with a Catalina-supplied trailer.
